“Good works” get some pretty bad press in the evangelical church. We have this belief that we are saved by grace and not good works and so we are skeptical of any teaching that calls us to good works. I have actually heard ministers say that a person’s works don’t matter at all because that is not what saves them. But just because we are not saved BY our good works doesn’t mean that we weren’t saved FOR good works. This morning we look at a passage where 3 times Paul calls for the Galatian Christians to “do good”. And as we examine it we will see that this is not legalistic but rather it flows from a deep desire to walk in the power of the Spirit.
Galatians 6:6-10
Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
